The Ultimate Fall Cleaning Checklist

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Thu, Oct 03, 2019 @ 11:52 AM

When the days start getting shorter and your thoughts turn to sitting around the fireplace instead of standing around the outdoor grill, it's time to invest a weekend on fall cleaning.

Some elbow grease now will make Christmas entertaining easier and keep your home safer and more secure, too. These five important autumn chores will help get you prepared for winter and save you from having to play catch up during those short winter weekends when there never seems to be enough time or energy to get things done before it gets dark outside.

1. How to clean cobwebs
It's spider season! That means one thing for your walls, ceilings, and any other crevices that these eight-legged creatures can possibly find their way into - cobwebs.

Grab a long feather duster, and start up-high, swiping over walls and ceilings. Don't forget the corners of the room, and also around light fittings (you may need a ladder for this).

2. Get your windows sparkling clean
As the heating comes on in Autumn, condensation often appears around the windows. It's important to give frames some TLC to prevent them becoming damaged from excess moisture.

Outside windows typically have more dirt and stains. Start by rinsing the windows with the hose, then fill a bucket with clean water and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Using a soft microfiber cloth, go over the surface of the window. For higher windows, use a sponge mop (or a soft cotton or microfiber mop) on a pole. Rinse thoroughly with the hose. Although it may seem like an unnecessary chore, you'll be amazed at what a difference clean glass makes to the amount of natural light in your home.

3. How to clean skirting boards
Once you've done a thorough dusting around the house, it's time to turn your attention to another, often-neglected area - skirting boards.

If you keep on top of your skirting boards, they won't need anything more than a quick once-over. Our favorite way to do this is with the vacuum. Pop a soft brush attachment on and gently vacuum over them.

If you have allowed your skirting boards to gather dust, you may need to wipe them over with a slightly-dampened microfibre cloth too.

4. Autumn is a great time to clean upholstery
It's officially home-cinema season. Make sure your surroundings are cosy and clean by giving upholstery a refresh.

If your sofa is smelling a little strange, we like to vacuum over upholstery using a soft brush, then sprinkling baking soda over the area. Leave for 15 minutes, then vacuum once more to leave your living room furniture looking and smelling lovely.

However, if you want a really thorough clean, it's best to call in a professional.

5. Refresh your carpets and rugs
A carpet cleaner's equipment provides results far superior to anything achievable with a DIY method. They will be able to really get into the pile of the carpet, removing germs and debris that aren't visible to the human eye.

An expert rug washer’s in-plant rug cleaning facility is highly recommended for the cleaning of Oriental and loose woven rugs. They should not be cleaned on location like your wall to wall carpeting.

You spend major time indoors when the weather gets cold, so the more you do now to clean and arrange your space, the more pleasant it will be to hunker down for the duration when the weatherman starts talking about frost on the pumpkin.

Define Your Space with an Area Rug

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Thu, Sep 19, 2019 @ 11:28 AM

Most homes today are built with the idea of “open concept” where one room flows seamlessly into another. This can make it hard to define the individual areas of your home. You can define your space with an area rug and still have your rooms transition smoothly from one room to another, here is how.

Your Entryway
When your entryway doesn’t have a foyer you can easily create the illusion of one by using an area rug. You can find a rug that contrasts nicely with your flooring, make sure it is made of durable material. If you want to build on the space add a small bench or chair.

Your Living Room
Homes today have much bigger rooms than they did in the past and with open concept homes it is hard to put together a conversation area that is intimate and inviting. An area rug can help create this space, put down a patterned rug it will draw the eye from the big open spaces and it will help make your room feel warmer and cozier.

Your Dining Room
Homes today have also really moved away from the traditional dining room, you can use an area rug to create a dining area. When you don’t have walls or a light fixture to define the dining area you can put something durable underneath your table and chairs, it also needs to be big enough that you can comfortably push your chair back when you leave the table.

High Traffic Areas
Using area rugs on high traffic areas can serve two purposes, it can define the traffic patterns in your home and it can protect your flooring. If you put down heavy duty or washable rugs in the foyer or in front of your patio doors you can extend the life of your carpet or existing floors. It also defines where one room ends and where another one begins.

The trend for the past two decades has been open concept design both with renovations and new construction. Using an area rug makes your space warmer, it helps you transition from one room to another. If you live in a rental property then an area rug is an affordable way to add color to your room without making drastic changes like painting. You can find affordable area rugs for every area of your home online. There are thousands of interior design ideas using area rugs on Pinterest. Use the area rug to define your style and make your home your own.

Improves Indoor Air Quality

New carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring choice available. Rugs and carpet actually act as a passive air filter, trapping dust, pollen and other particles and removing them from the breathing zone. Studies have shown that people with asthma and allergy problems have seen symptoms improve with carpet.

Provides Warmth and Comfort

Carpet provides actual thermal resistance, or R-value. In colder climates or seasons, it retains warm air longer, an energy conservation benefit. Carpet also provides a comfortable place to sit, play or work and gives a room an overall warmer feeling.

Softens Slips and Falls

Rugs and carpet are ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. Carpet provides safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals.

Reduces Noise

Big screen TVs, speaker phones, computers and modern sound systems make our homes noisy places. Carpet helps absorb these sounds. Adding a cushion pad beneath your carpet reduces noise even further. Carpet also works as a sound barrier between floors by helping to block sound transmission to rooms below. And carpet on stairs helps mask the sound of constant foot traffic.
