Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solutions

We’ve all accidently spilled drinks on our carpets, or stained them by tracking dirt in from outside. What most of us haven’t done, however, is buy a professional carpet cleaning solution to use in these situations. Fortunately, you might not have to buy anything at all to get your carpet looking like new again. You can make your own homemade carpet cleaning solution with a few household items. Here are a few ways to get started:

Synthetic Carpet Cleaners
Note: Dip a white cloth into these solutions and apply to the stain. Never pour the solutions directly onto carpeting.
  • Detergent solution: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of a translucent liquid dishwashing detergent, such as Dawn or Joy, into one cup of lukewarm water.
  • Vinegar solution: Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water.
  • Solvent solution: Use an oil solvent. Or substitute nail-polish remover, such as Cutex Quick & Gentle non-acetone polish remover.
  • Ammonia solution: Mix one tablespoon of clear household ammonia with 1/2 cup of lukewarm water.
  Other Solutions
  • Baking soda works to remove pet stains. Just sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the soiled section, and then let it sit for a couple hours before vacuuming.
  • Club soda also works well, but may have to be applied with a cleaning solution several times before a stain is removed. Start by blotting the section before pouring the club soda over it. Once the solution has stopped fizzing, immediately blot the spot again, repeating as necessary.
  • Diluted bleach can help too. Just use 10 parts water to one part bleach. Spray the solution on the stain, and then let it sit for 15 seconds before thoroughly rinsing the area with warm water. If you can still see the stain, repeat the process until the spot is gone.
Considering these homemade stain remedies is a great way to save money!
If these solutions do not work for your stains or if you would be more comfortable allowing professionals to handle this for you, call us anytime!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Carpet Cleaning

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Wed, Nov 13, 2013 @ 01:23 PM

It’s a fact that when rugs and carpets are properly cleaned and maintained regularly, they will look their best and last longer. In order to do so, there are a couple of Do’s and Don’ts that should come to mind in efforts to make your rugs and carpets look and stay beautiful.

 Don’ts:

1. Never allow a wall-to-wall carpet cleaning firm to clean an oriental or area rug in your home. It may be the easier and cheaper alternative, but it will harm your rugs more than anything. This is because when a cleaner cleans a rug in the home with a hot water extraction machine, the top half of the rug will become saturated with detergent. Over-wetting the rug will eventually lead to mildew and ultimately ruin it.

2. Don't go with the cheapest price for the cleaning. You will get ripped off and your rugs won't get cleaned as properly as possible. Also, beware of companies that don't give you a firm "per square foot" price. Vague prices will only rack up extensive overcharges once they are in your home.

3. Don't forget to stain protect your rugs. Using Fiber-Guard will provide a superior top-to-bottom protection on each and every fiber in handmade rugs and carpets. It will help prevent permanent staining, make vacuuming easier and more effective, help prevent wear, and prolong the longevity of the rug.

4. Don't forget to use a good pad under your rug. They greatly prevent wear and all the pads we offer are custom-cut to fit your rug or your exact specifications.

Do's:

1. Clean your handmade oriental rugs and machine made carpets every two to four years. Dan Hodges, President of the Oriental Rug Importers Association believes that this is crucial. Cleaning will remove grit and the surface soiling that leads to a dull appearance of your rug or carpet.

2. Go with a repitable firm with a certified rug specialist, great training, and a cleaning facility of their own. You want to make sure that the person in your home really knows what they're doing.

3. Always have your area rugs taken out of the home and cleaned by a professional company that specializes in Oriental rugs.

4. Vacuum your rugs and carpets frequently.

5. Rotate your rugs 180 degrees at least once a year.

6. Be ready when spills and accidents happen with our Spot and Stain Remover Kit. Available on our site for $29.95 plus shipping and handling.

7. Green Cleaning is important for your home. By going green when cleaning your carpets, it can help improve short and long term health benefits for your family and pets. It will reduce those certain chemicals in cleaning products that have been linked to health problems such as asthma and allergies. We are the world's largest and greenest cleaning facility and can conduct responsible and green cleaning processes in your home.

Carpet Care Tips for Every Household

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Wed, Feb 13, 2013 @ 11:33 AM

carpet care tipsDo you know how to properly maintain your fine rugs, carpets, furniture and drapes?  We do!

Check out Rug Renovating's carpet care tips:

1. Never clean handmade or machine-made rugs in your home no matter what anyone tells you, even if it is inexpensive.

  • Handmade Oriental and machine made carpets should be cleaned every 2 to 4 years, as suggested by Dan Hodges, President of the Oriental Rug Importers Association.
  • Never ever allow a wall-to-wall carpet cleaning firm to clean an oriental or area rug in your home.

2. Always have your area rug taken out of the home and cleaned by a professional company that specializes in Oriental rugs.

  • “Over time grit and dirt become embedded so deeply that professional cleaning is required. Oriental rugs and other area carpets should be taken out of the home for proper cleaning.”- Dan Hodges.
  • The cleaning will remove the grit as well as the surface soiling that gradually dulls the appearance of the carpet.

3. Protect your wool rugs and carpets from stains and soil. Wool handmade and machine-made rugs and carpets are sold without any type of stain protection. Wool as a fiber is very absorbent. We have seen countless incidents where a spill or an accident has irreversibly stained a beautiful rug. Stain protection is a must for any rug or carpet.

  • Fiber-Guard provides a superior top-to-bottom protection on each and every fiber in handmade rugs and carpets, wall-to-wall carpet, fabric and leather furniture, wall fabrics and draperies.
  • It will not wear off like other stain repellents and will leave your fabric’s color, feel and texture unchanged while remaining safe and non-toxic. It helps prevent all types of oil and water based stains and spills.

4. Spills and accidents should be addressed immediately. Have the proper tools on hand so you will be ready to act.

  • You can order the finest spot and stain remover kit from us which includes a bottle of Detergent Solution, a bottle of Dry Cleaner Solution, a bottle of Absorb-A-Spill, our Interior Care & Maintenance Guide, One Personal Spotting Towel, Instructions on Proper Usage, and an Easy to Use Reorder Form.

5. Padding is a must to protect and prolong the life of rugs and carpets.

  • Carpet padding greatly prevents wear.
  • We carry a full line of carpet padding that can be delivered to you when we return your cleaning order. We can also ship the right pad for your needs via UPS.

6. Don’t wait for a small repair to become a major restoration.

  • Our master craftspeople can do almost any type of repair on both antique and cotemporary handmade rugs, custom made rugs, machine made rugs such as Karastans and Couristan and broadloom carpet.
  • We can expertly reweave holes, renap worn areas, restore moth damage, repair seems, reduce a rug’s size, rewrap the binding on the side, reweave worn missing fringes, sew on artificial fringes, unravel and overcast worn fringes and patch holes.

7. Vacuum your rugs and carpets frequently.

8. Rotate your rugs 180 degrees at least once a year.

9. Installed Broadloom Carpet should only be cleaned using the steam soil extraction method.

  • The main ways to clean a carpet is through shampoo, carbonated water, bonnet, dry powder and steam extraction.
  • We use steam cleaning and we aren’t the only ones who recommend it. Shaw Carpet, the largest manufacture of broadloom carpet in the world, recommends the hot water extraction system, which research indicates provides the best capability for cleaning.

10. Wall-to-wall carpeting should be cleaned every 18 months according to Dupont, the leading producer of carpet fiber.

  • On your rugs and carpets, we suggest that you use a good vacuum cleaner with a motor driven brush and beater bar.
  • Be careful not to get the fringe of a handmade rug caught in the brush of the vacuum.
  • Use the hose connection on the vacuum to thoroughly clean all upholstered furniture, drapes and other window treatments.

11. Clean for your health all soft surfaces, rugs, carpets, furniture and drapes. Cleaning will absorb dust and dirt and keep it out of the air you breathe. If you don’t periodically clean these surfaces, dust and dirt may contribute to certain health problems.

  • When our technicians arrive at your home or office they will pre-spot the problem areas, move the furniture that can be moved, thoroughly clean the carpet, replace the furniture to its original location, and put foil pads under the legs of the furniture to protect the furniture.
  • We also have an even better process that we call Ultra Clean. With it, we will apply an anti-microbial treatment to your furnishings and follow this with an application of carpet protector.

New Oriental Rug Purchase - Now What?

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Fri, Jan 25, 2013 @ 04:04 PM

oriental rugs 000015941364XSmallOriental rug prices have risen significantly in the last decade, due to their long-term durability.  A rug of even modest quality will most likely outlive you and your children; therefore you should definitely consider these steps towards caring for the valuable and beautiful addition in your home.

  • Handmade oriental rugs should be cleaned every two to four years.
    • Dan Hodges, President of the Oriental Rug Importers Association says, “Over time grit and dirt become embedded so deeply that professional cleaning is required. Oriental rugs and other area carpets should be taken out of the home for proper cleaning.”
    • The cleaning will remove the grit as well as the surface soiling that gradually dulls the appearance of the carpet.

  • Never ever allow a wall-to-wall carpet cleaning firm to clean an oriental rug in your home.
    • It may sound like a great idea, but nothing could be more harmful to your precious investment.  When a cleaner attempts to clean a rug in the home with a hot water extraction machine, the top half of the rug becomes saturated with detergent while the bottom half remains untouched. As quickly as the solution is sprayed onto the rug, it is extracted by the machine’s vacuum. This process never gets the dirt and grit out of the bottom half of the rug’s foundation.

  • Have us pick up your oriental rugs for cleaning.
    • When your rug is lying flat on the floor, the foundation never has the opportunity to dry properly. This will lead to mildew and dry rot, either ruining the rug or drastically reducing the rugs longevity and value.
    • Here at our facility, we dry your rugs as we clean them. The drying process is a crucial part of the cleaning process. Our dry-rooms are state of the art; we are able to control the amount of heat and humidity so that the rug dries under optimal conditions. Many rugs are dried in a vertical, hanging fashion allowing air to circulate on both sides of the rug, which quickens the drying process.

  • Protect your oriental rugs from stains and soil with Fiber-Guard.
    • Fiber-Guard provides a superior top-to-bottom protection on each and every fiber in handmade rugs and carpets.
    • It will not wear off like other stain repellants and will leave your rug’s color, feel and texture unchanged while remaining safe and non-toxic.
    • It helps to prevent all types of oil and water based stains and spills.

  • Rug padding greatly prevents wear.
    • We carry a full line of carpet padding that can be delivered to you when we return your cleaning order. We can also ship the right pad for your individual needs via UPS.
    • All pads we offer are custom-cut to fit your rug or to your exact specifications.
    • Types of pads include: Dura Hold, Non-Skid, No-Muv, Rug-Lock, Ozite, and Summit padding.

  • Don’t wait for a small repair to become a major restoration. Look into our repair services and reweaving for your oriental rug.
    • We can expertly reweave holes, renap worn areas, restore moth damage, repair seams, reduce a rug’s size, rewrap the binding on the side, reweave worn or missing fringes, sew on artificial fringes, unravel and overcast worn fringes and patch holes.

  • Vacuum your rugs and carpets regularly.

  • Rotate your rugs 180 degrees at least once a year.

Our Customers love our Professional Rug Cleaning Services

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 @ 11:15 AM

Rug Renovating is the most professional rug cleaning company in NYCWith great customer experiences, come great customer testimonials.  At Rug Renovating, we pride ourselves on the complete satisfaction of our customers.  They consistenly praise us on our professional carpet cleaning and rug restoration services. We love hearing feedback from customers who are satisfied with the work we’ve done for them, and the encounters they had when working with the Rug Renovating team. The following will provide two examples of testimonials that come from Ellen and Rita, and a list, which features important factors that go hand in hand with happy customer reviews.

A recent testimonial comes from Ellen in Fairfield,Connecticut, who sent us an email expressing her happiness and satisfaction. She has a 9x12 handmade rug that had some pulls that needed repair. She spoke to one of our employees, Lenny, and she stated that he couldn’t have been any nicer or more informative. Lenny asked her some questions in order to give her an estimate, and went further on to explain the cost per square foot, which depends on whether the rug is handmade or machine made. Lenny also informed her that he would have the rug picked up, examined, and call her back with an estimate. If she didn’t like it, it would be sent back no charge, which is one of our important policies here.

The next day, she was instructed to call between 4:00 and 5:00 pm, before scheduled pick up, in order to find out the time window they would be coming, which was promised by the men who were picking up the rug. Lenny called her back after he evaluated the rug and informed her of the price. She also decided to buy a pad from us, which would replace her old, ratty one, and something we recommend. She was told that the rug would be arriving between 10 am and 2 pm and it was at her house by 12:30 pm. They lifted the sofa and two oversized chairs and then laid out the rug for her. She was extremely satisfied at how clean and bright it looked when laid out. She was also happy about the fact there are no hidden costs, everything was told to her upfront, and it arrived when they said it would, all of which is something we take extremely seriously.

Another recent testimonial comes from Rita in Manhattan,New York. She appreciated the fact that the morning of the delivery, two of our men, Anthony and Victor, called her to give the approximate time of arrival and even arrived shortly after their call. Rita also loved how professional and courteous they were, and that they knew exactly what they were doing, which she found to be another huge plus. She also noted how pleasant they were to deal with, something we believe is crucial when working with customers. Anthony and Victor placed the mats and the rugs, which were large and heavy, underneath the beds with ease. While working with the rugs, they put shields on their feet, which is something we do with every job while working in our customers' homes. Rita also noted that Jo, an employee she spoke to about the process, was very pleasant and reassuring on the phone, taking good care of her. Rita and her husband were both so pleased with the experience they had with us and stated that the rugs came out beautifully.

We have compiled the following list of important factors included in the high level of service Rug Renovating delivers. These comments have been included in testimonials written to us and highlighted by some of our happiest customers.

  • Our men being the most professional, polite, and enjoyable when working with our customers in their homes.
  • Taking careful procedures during a delivery, such as wearing shields on their feet when laying out the rugs.
  • Keeping our promises to our customers- no hidden fees and everything is told upfront.
  • Always being prompt and on time with deliveries and giving our customers a time approximation.
  • Our employees that speak on the phone to our customers are informative and patient.
  • Always keeping our promises to our customers.

Quick Repair Can Minimize Oriental Rug Damage

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Fri, Mar 02, 2012 @ 10:06 AM

A well-crafted Oriental rug is made to last. The world is graced with exceptional Oriental rugs that have stood the test of time and continue to beautify their surroundings well over a century after artisans tied the final knots. But ancient rug makers did not envision the chemicals, pollutants and abusive wear to which Oriental rugs may now be commonly exposed. Even the strongest natural fibers and most expert craftsmanship are no match for some of the modern perils that can damage Oriental rugs in New York City, Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.

  • Water Damage RugsWater damage, most frequently caused by poor rug-cleaning methods, flooding or leaking potted plants, can rot the cotton fibers that serve as the rug’s foundation. To avoid damage, do not place potted plants directly on rugs; place them on rolling stands and check pots for leaks. Avoid placing Oriental rugs directly on cement floors where moisture accumulation can cause damage.
  • Insect damage, which is primarily caused by feeding moth and carpet beetle larvae, can be repaired by an expert reweaver. To prevent damage, vacuum the surface of the rug weekly and the reverse at least twice a year.
  • Chemical damage is most often caused by poor rug cleaning. Some rug cleaning companies bleach rug fringe which weakens the fibers. Expert rug renovators can refringe damaged rugs.

Prompt Oriental rug cleaning NYC by a skilled professional rug cleaning company can prevent permanent damage to your cherished Oriental rug. When shopping for Oriental rug cleaning services, choose one that also offers expert rug repair NYC by master craftspeople. When damage occurs, prompt professional cleaning and restoration of your Oriental rug will protect your investment and ensure that you and your family will be able to enjoy your rug for generations to come.

Benefits of Professional Rug Cleaning

Posted by Paul Iskyan on Fri, Feb 24, 2012 @ 04:17 PM

If you were planning to have your hardwood floors refinished, you wouldn’t allow some unknown handyman with a circular sander in his truck to touch the exquisite grain on your floors. Likewise, you wouldn’t entrust your fine Oriental, Persian or antique wool rugs to your average rug cleaner NYC. The typical New York City rug cleaner may clean thousands of yards of wall-to-wall carpeting in Brooklyn condos and suburban Long Island residences each month but rarely see a fine, hand-knotted rug. Finely-made, handcrafted rugs require expert handling and professional rug cleaning NYC processes to protect their delicate colors and fibers and ensure a long life that justifies your investment and maximizes your pleasure in their ownership.

Before allowing a service provider to cross the threshold, discerning consumers should vet the company’s credentials. In selecting a professional rug cleaning NYC company, savvy consumers should look for professional expertise, long-term experience, professional certification, proven cleaning processes, solicitous customer attention and, most importantly, superior customer satisfaction. When valuable possessions need to be cleaned, you want someone on the job who understands your love of fine things and will value and protect the investment you have made in your most prized possessions.
